Thirteen

The sound of a baby fussing had David blinking his eyes open in the predawn gloom. Near his face, a tiny fist shook angrily, and he reached over to slip his finger inside his daughter’s hand, propping up on one elbow to peer down at her through the shadows. Ele was still sound asleep and he didn’t want to wake her so, after a deep breath for courage, David got out of bed and picked up Rose in his arms.

“How’s Daddy’s little girl this morning, huh?” he whispered as he tiptoed away from the bed and toward the bathroom across the space. “Do you need your diaper changed, huh? Do you?”

He inhaled deeply and yep, a diaper change was definitely in order. Okay. Fine. He could do this. Yes, it was gross, but then so was digging latrines in the desert or wading waist deep through boggy swamp water. Changing a kid’s diaper couldn’t be nearly that hard, could it? At least it would be over with faster.

After flipping on the lights in the bathroom, he gathered supplies from the diaper bag, and continued talking to Rose in hopes of keeping her from crying. “Let’s see. Mommy used the wipes and the washcloth and the cream and the powder. Oh, and a diaper.” He stacked it all on the small vanity near the sink, then set Rose down in the empty area beside them on the counter. “Right. Let’s get this stinky thing off you.”

In his mind, David replayed what he’d seen Ele do when she’d change their daughter. Pants off. Check. Unsecure the tabs on the side of the diaper then slide it out from beneath her. That last one made him gag slightly again, but he managed to get the soiled thing off Rose and quickly rolled it up and tossed it in the trash bag nearby before grabbing a wet wipe. Without pants, Rose perked right up, wriggling and squirming. He remembered Ele’s comment about her liking to run around naked, so he gently placed his hand on her chest to keep her in place as he cleaned her up. “There you go. That feels better doesn’t it? Get you all fixed up here and surprise Mommy with our skills, eh?”

Rose stared up at him, smiling. Or maybe that was gas. Hard to tell.

“Swillzzz!” His daughter said, looking very proud of herself.

David took it as encouragement, though, as he finished with the wipes then applied some powder and cream to Rose’s bottom before grabbing the new diaper and slipping it beneath her. Soon, he had the thing secured and tugged her pants back into place. Boom. Done.

For some crazy reason, he felt more accomplished in that moment than when he’d gotten his first commendation for bravery in Iraq. He washed his hands and put the gear back in the diaper bag before scooping Rose up in his arms again and wandering back out into the living room. Thankfully, Ele was still sleeping. He didn’t want to wake her.
